President Uhuru Kenyatta to preside over the laying of foundation stone of WMI
The University of Nairobi is greatly honoured to have the President of Republic of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta to preside over the laying the foundation stone of the Wangari Maathai Institute on Tuesday, 23rd August 2016 at 11:00am at Upper Kabete Campus.
The Wangari Maathai Institute is a GOK/ADB project entitled “Support to Enhancement of Quality and Relevance in Higher Education, Science and Technology (HEST)” that is jointly funded by the African Development Bank and the Government of Kenya. The entire project is expected to cost Kshs 1.4 Billion and AfDB has granted Kshs 0.6 Billion for phase I and now fundraising for Kshs 0.8 billion to complete the phase II.
The project construction started on 29th February 2016 and the President will lay the Foundation Stone on 23rd August 2016. The WMI is a global centre of excellence in peace and environmental studies that was conceptualised by the University and the Founding Chair the Late Professor Wangari Maathai to immortalise her name and ethos on environment. The campus located on a 50 acre land along Kapenguria Road, off Waiyaki Way is designed and constructed as Green Campus, Sustainable, Conducive Environment for creativity and willingness to think “outside the box” with Pan African Theme.
