DESIGN THEORY AND INFORMATION PROCESSING: SELECTION OF MATERIAL FOR A GEAR DRIVE

ABSTRACT
Material selection is a very important process in engineering design. It involves
extensive research and advanced analysis methods so as to come up with the best
performing material while considering all the major design drivers. These include
performance, safety, cost, time frame and availability of resources. This project aims
at identifying the best material choice for a gear drive (case study title) while
employing the principles of decision theory and information processing in material
selection. The process involved happens in two main stages. i.e. Screening – a large
material database is reduced to a small candidate list which meets the critical property
limits and Ranking – the materials are ranked according to indices formulated from
availability, cost and machinability. Additional supporting information will then be
used to choose the most suitable material for the gear drive.
