KIPEVU IN MOMBASA

Third years pose for a photo during their industrial visit to Kengen, Kipevu 1 station in Mombasa.

The station produces power which it then supplies to Kenya Power. It has 6 machines where each machine produces 10MW hence in total it produces 60MW.

The machines uses two types of oil; D4O which is used for starting and turning off the machines and H4O which is used when the machine has started running.

The oil from the supplier is stored in two large storage tanks. This is then transferred to the pre-treatment tanks owned by the station. The oil when needed is then taken to the centrifugal plant where sludge and water is removed from it by use of centrifugal principles.

It was noted that the critical thing which have to be kept in control is temperature .This is monitored in the control room automatically but also under supervision by the machine operators.
