Overview
The objectives of the course are to equip students with:
a. Knowledge in energy, sources, availability and use.
b. Knowledge and skills required for development, acquisition and application of
improved methods and analysis in process design, operations and management to
minimize energy costs, improve productivity and reinforce environmental responsibility.
c. Technical as well as financial skills and ability to carry out research in energy
management as well as develop and implement energy management projects.
Structure
The course shall run over a minimum of four (4) semesters to a maximum of ten (10) semesters of fifteen (15) weeks each.
The course shall be by course work, examination and project.
The course shall consist of six (6) core units, four (4) electives and a project (equivalent to 6units).
The first year of study shall be totally devoted to course work, while the second year of study shall be devoted to the project.
In each of the two semesters of the first year, students shall be required to take up to three (3) core units and two (2) electives.
A course unit shall be defined as forty-five (45) contact hours comprising of lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, industrial visits and seminars
Admission Requirements
The common regulations for the Masters degrees at the University of Nairobi
shall apply.
The minimum requirements for eligibility into Master of Science in Energy
management programme are:
1 Holders of at least an Upper Second honours Bachelor’s degree of the
University of Nairobi in any relevant Engineering or Physical sciences discipline.
2 Holders of a Lower Second honours Bachelor’s degree of the University of
Nairobi in any relevant Engineering or Physical sciences discipline and two
(2) years of relevant experience.
3 Holders of at least a Bachelor’s pass degree with Postgraduate diploma in
Energy management of the University of Nairobi.
4 Holders of equivalent qualifications to those specified in (1), (2), (3) and
(4) above from institutions recognized by the Senate.y management projects.

Exam Regulations
EXAMINATION REGULATIONS
The common regulations governing examinations for the Master’s Degree in the University of Nairobi shall apply.
Written Examinations
1. All course units taken in a given semester shall be examined at the end of that semester.
2. A candidate shall be required to complete all course work and assignments.
3. All course units shall be examined through a two (2) hour written examination paper except the course unit FME 716.
4. The final written examination shall account for 60% of the marks in each course unit, while course work shall account for 40%.
5 The pass mark for each course unit shall be 50%.
6 A candidate who fails to obtain 50% for the unit shall, on recommendation of the Board of Examiners and approved by Senate, be allowed to retake/resit the unit and attempt the examination again for a maximum of two times.
7 A pass obtained in any repeat examination shall be recorded as 50% in the candidate’s academic record.
8 A candidate who fails in a course unit in the second repeat examination, or fails to complete the course in prescribed time, shall on the 5 recommendation of the Board of Examiners and approved by the Senate
be discontinued.
9 A candidate shall not be allowed to sit any examination unless he or she
has attended at least two thirds of the lectures of the course unit.
