Prof. Philippa Reed and Michael Reeson (University of Southampton) visit the Plastic waste laboratory of the University of Nairobi accompaied by Prof. George Rading and Dr. Thomas Ochuku Mbuya (Chairman department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering)

The laboratory is run by Mr. Kelly Mutonga - PhD student, Mr. Johnson Ngugi – PhD student and Dr. Kennedy Ogila – post- doc fellow.

In this laboratory investigations are carried out on waste plastic and quarry dust to develop new novel construction materials. Waste plastic is mixed with quarry dust at certain combinations and melted in an extruder. A hydraulic press is then used to compress the molten mixture in a moldto produce a sheet of material. Specimens for mechanical tests and other investigations are thereafter extracted from the sheet.
