Overview

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Masters in mechanical Engineering program is to promote the design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems for the economic progress of society in an efficient, economical, and environmentally sustainable manner.

Rationale

Students who ask, “What is an MSc in Mechanical Engineering?” will find that the answer is broad, covering many aspects of study. These include the advanced study of design, analysis, development, creation, and maintenance of mechanical systems. These systems may be used in industries such as transportation, automation, energy generation, and aerospace. Programs typically involve engineering courses and technical electives. Some examples of courses include Design Engineering, Management, Mechanics and Materials, Biomechanical Engineering, and Aeronautical Engineering. Students often work with a counselor to create their own specific tracks of study.

Objectives

The goal of the program is to create a pool of highly trained personnel for mechanical engineering education and research in view of the many upcoming universities in the country and in the global space

Mode of Delivery

  • Face-to-Face Mode

This is through lectures and tutorials using notes, electronic presentations, instruction manuals, group discussions, practical laboratory demonstrations and fieldwork.

  • Open, Distance Learning and e-Learning

In case of delivery through ODeL, special arrangements shall be made for the practical laboratory, field work and computing sessions. Where not feasible alternative arrangements will be made to do them on campus. 

  • Blended Learning

This is a hybrid of face to face with Open, Distance Learning and e-learning

  • Face-to-Face Mode

  • Open, Distance Learning and e-Learning

Structure

The programme shall commence at the beginning of the Academic Year and continue for a minimum of 21 months.  The programme duration shall be divided as follows:

      PART I:  Course Work and Examinations                                                    9 months

      PART II: Research Project and Thesis Presentations                                12 months

Part I of the programme shall be divided into two semesters of equal duration.

 

Admission Requirements

A holder of an Upper Second-Class degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering of the University of Nairobi.

A holder of an upper second-class degree of Bachelor of Science in any other discipline of Engineering of the University of Nairobi.

A holder of an upper second-class degree of Bachelor of Science of the University of Nairobi.

A holder of a qualification awarded by an institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi as equivalent to one of the above qualifications of the University of Nairobi.

Exam Regulations

Exam Regulations

  1. All taught courses shall be examined by written examinations.
  2. A course unit shall be examined at the end of the semester during which the course unit was taught.
  3. Marks awarded for course work, laboratory and practical assignments shall count as part of the examination marks for a course unit.
  4. All course work, laboratory and practical reports shall be submitted before the date of the written examination for the course unit for which the course work forms an integral part.
  5. The titles of examination papers are as given in the syllabus.
  6. The duration of a course unit examination paper shall be 3 hours.
  7. The schedule of maximum marks for each course unit shall be as follows:

Course work                15 marks

Written examination   35 marks

Total                            50 marks

 

  1. The pass mark for each course unit shall be 50% of the maximum marks for the course unit.
  2. The aggregate pass mark for the first year of study shall be 50% of the maximum marks for the first year of study.  The examination results for the first semester examination shall be released together with the examination results for the second semester examinations.
  3. The aggregate pass mark shall comprise of marks from individual compulsory and elective course units taken in the two semesters making up the first year of study.
  4. The maximum marks for the first year of study shall be 500.

l)   

i)          A candidate having obtained 50% overall aggregate mark but failing with a minimum of twenty (20 marks in not more than two (2) course units shall be allowed to sit supplementary examinations in these tow course units.

ii)         If marks obtained by a candidate in a supplementary examination in a course unit are less than 50% the candid date has failed in the supplementary examination.

iii)        If a candidate fails in a course unit examination at the first sitting and then fails in the supplementary examination, the candidate is to discontinue with the M.Sc. Programme.

iv)        If a candidate fails in more than two course units the candidate is to discontinue with the whole M.sc. Programme.

m)        Research Project

  1. Research work shall start during the first year of study and continue for the rest of the period of study.
  2. The research project proposal shall be submitted to the department for approval before the start of the second semester examinations.  The proposal shall comply with the University of Nairobi Regulations for submission of project proposals.
  3. The research project shall be examined by a written thesis and oral examination.  The thesis and the oral examination shall be examined by a Board of Examiners constitute din accordance with University of Nairobi Regulations.
  4. In case of failure in the research project work, the Board of Examiners will make a suitable recommendation in accordance with University of Nairobi Regulations.
  5. There are no classifications of the M.Sc. degree in its final award.
  6. the examination of the thesis shall be as per the Rules and Regulations of the University of Nairobi.
  7. The degree awarded shall be Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering the appropriate programme.
