Seminar presentation by Prof Philippa Reed

Prof PhilippaReed, from the University of Southampton UK presents on "SHORT PEENING AND FATIGUE MITIGATION APPROACHES IN LP STEAM TURBINE BLADES".

Philippa Reed is Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southampton where she is also Head of the EngD programme in Transport and Environment. She graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Materials Science and Metallurgy from the University of Cambridge in 1985 before proceeding to complete a PhD degree from the same University. Philippa is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Metals. Her research interests centre on the micromechanisms of failure in engine materials, pressure vessels and welds. This includes numerical modelling of the failure processes, data mining, materials data conservation, and anomalous crack behaviour. A particular focus is on the effects of external service factors like environment or complex loading on failure. Philippa has research collaboration with EON, Rolls Royce, dstl, Alstom, TWI and Luxfer Gas Cylinders. Currently, Prof Reed is involved in collaborative work with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UoN in a project which seeks to convert plastic and other solid waste into useful construction materials.
