Overview

Philosophy

Master in Energy Management programs are designed to prepare individuals to apply engineering principles and technical skills to help support professionals engaged in the development of sustainable energy-efficient practices.  Also due to the increase of qualified energy professionals, many engineers and urban planners are seeking individuals holding Master in Energy Management degrees.

Rationale

Curriculum for Master in Energy Management programs includes such topics as principles of energy conservation, instrumentation calibration, monitoring systems and test principles, energy loss inspection procedures, energy conservation techniques and report preparation. Professionals with a Master in Energy Management degree can be employed in a wide range of industries such as engineering, manufacturing, urban planning, government, private and public consulting firms, energy companies, sustainable living firms and conservation units.

Objectives

The objectives of the course are to equip students with:

Attachment Opportunities

  • Industry - Every medium/large scale industry in India needs to have an in-house Energy Manager as per BEE guidelines of minimum power consumption. In this case, Industry can be of any large scale sector like Iron & Steel, Aluminium, Automobiles, Cement, Pulp & Paper or medium and small scale like commercial buildings, auto ancillary units, paint manufacturers etc. One important thing to note here is that typically entry into any industry as a fresher is not common since the common practice in most of the Industries is to promote a senior electrical/mechanical engineer working in maintenance and give him the additional responsibility of Energy Management to drive the initiative in the industry after he has good understanding of the process
  • Consulting - There are multiple Energy Management/Energy Audit firms accredited by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) which are specialized in conducting detailed energy audits for the Industries as listed above. These audit firms go to an industry as a team and conduct detailed measurements/analysis and calculate the potential for energy saving in that Industry. The final deliverable will be to prepare a comprehensive audit report with all the technical analysis and submit it to the Industrial entity requesting for this service.
  • Equipment Manufacturers - Energy is mainly consumed by different equipment used by different clients. with age and advent of newer technologies, there will be good potential of technology upgradation (Ex: Lighting replacement from conventional to LEDs). Therefore, the equipment manufacturers of different energy efficient equipment will also require energy managers who are technical and also are into sales and marketing depending on the role. This is typically interesting if your interest is in specializing on one specific equipment/area/industry sector.
